AnIML separates analytical data exchange from scientific validity

The emerging ASTM XML standard can structure analytical records across systems without proving that a conversion, method, or result is valid.

Exchange starts with a shared record structure

The AnIML project presents an XML-based approach for exchanging analytical chemistry and biological data. Its public architecture separates a common core from technique-specific definitions. That design can help systems represent shared concepts consistently while retaining information needed for a particular analytical technique.

For laboratories, the value is not merely opening a file in another application. A useful exchange should preserve the relationship among sample, method, instrument, acquisition, sequence, raw or processed data, calculations, parameters, units, results, actors, timestamps, and changes. If those relationships are lost, syntactic readability can conceal a materially incomplete scientific record.

A schema-valid file can still be wrong

Conformance to an exchange structure does not prove that the source values were accurate, that every field was mapped, or that units, precision, sign, time, sequence, and identifiers survived conversion. Optional elements, vendor extensions, unsupported features, derived values, and proprietary source behavior can all affect fidelity.

A credible migration or integration records the source format and version, conversion software and configuration, mapping decisions, exceptions, checksums where appropriate, reconciliation population, acceptance criteria, reviewer, and unresolved gaps. Validation should include representative and boundary cases rather than a single file that happens to open.

Technique definitions preserve context, not validity

The public AnIML architecture uses the technique schema and technique definition documents to express technique-specific information. That can improve semantic consistency across systems, but it does not establish that a method is suitable, validated, correctly executed, or scientifically defensible. Those conclusions depend on the actual procedure, instrument state, calibration, controls, samples, data, calculations, specifications, and review.

Similarly, an extension can preserve information that the common structure does not cover. The presence of an extension is not evidence that another system understood it. Implementations should make unsupported, transformed, defaulted, or dropped content visible instead of quietly accepting a partial exchange.

Interoperability needs a bounded claim

A vendor can demonstrate that it exports or imports AnIML and identify the supported version, techniques, elements, extensions, and validation evidence. It should not present the label as universal interoperability or regulatory approval. The emerging-standard status, implementation profile, source-system constraints, and receiving-system behavior all belong in the claim.

Lab Systems Index uses the official project record as a data-portability lens. It does not establish method validity, data integrity, sample identity, conversion fidelity, instrument performance, result accuracy, specification status, product quality, regulatory acceptance, or compliance. Those require complete records and qualified scientific, quality, technical, and regulatory review.

Enterprise buyer test

Translate this change into the exact population, record type, workflow stage, decision owner, effective date, and evidence that could be affected. Ask current or prospective providers to demonstrate the named workflow with representative data and an exception—not a polished feature tour. Record what official documentation establishes, what a provider states, what the team observes, and what remains unresolved.

A defensible review also identifies the dependency outside the product. Authority interpretation, policy configuration, data quality, integrations, human judgment, approval rights, release governance, training, and retained evidence may remain customer or service responsibilities. The evaluation should preserve those boundaries instead of treating a technology claim as the complete operating model.
